The law protects the relationship
between a client and counselor or therapist. Information cannot be
disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions include:
Suspected Abuse of a Child, Dependent Adult or Elder: If a therapist suspects that a child, a dependent adult or an elderly person is being abused thetherapist is required to notify authorities immediately.
A Client Is Threatening to Harm Himself or Herself: If a client is threatening to harm himself or herself the therapist is required by law to take steps to insure their safety.
A Client is Threatening to Harm Another Person: If during the course of a counseling session a client threatens to harm someone else the law requires the therapist to notify the police and the intended victim.
